CEdO530 Digital Storytelling Week 2

This week entailed a lot of different things in Digital Storytelling. Much of my time was spent investigating Voicethread. Voicethread is one way to create a digital story. Images and videos can be uploaded and the author can add voice to the images. Other users can comment on the voicethreads either with voice, typed in comments or video. We were asked to create a voicethread about civil rights. I enjoyed the experience of creating a voicethread. Am I an expert after creating one voicethread? Not even close! But I would like to spend more time with this to hone my skills and create effective voicethreads.

At this point I'm struggling to find a way to incorporate digital storytelling into my classroom. I can see using voicethread as a means for student participation. Students who don't necessarily feel comfortable speaking up in class could participate online. Also, voicethread could be used when a substitute is in the classroom.....as long as the teacher can plan that far ahead! At this point I will have to do some thinking about how to incorporate it into student assignments.

I am continuing to enjoy taking pictures for posterous. It is fun to see my creative side come out. I've never considered myself a creative person, so this has my juices flowing!

  1. Emily, I really like your posterous. I really like the idea of the gnome. What made you think of using the gnome? It makes me think of Flat Stanley. I too really like posterous. I think it is one of my all time favorite assignments thus far. I have to try to control myself with not adding too many pictures. Voicethread took me a long time to do. I spent a lot of time doing the research and trying to get the audio just right. How are you thinking about using Voicethread with a sub?

  2. I think you could use Voicethread as a way for students to comment on a presentation that you made in class. Similar to our Civil Rights assignment, you could have each student leave their thoughts about a particular slide, or have them record their answers to predefined questions. Of course you could also use it to pre-record your own lectures and stories.

I too am trying to find more creative ways to take pictures for the Posterous assignment. One thing I have started doing is to use picture editing software to create interesting effects like Black and White or Sepia. It adds interest to some photos.

  3. Interesting... I think that I might be in the very minor minority of people who is not enthralled by the Posterous assignment. I've never been one for taking pictures and I find that the ones that I snap with my cellphone are uninteresting. I'm trying to get onboard... but it's not happening quickly!

The Voicethread assignments have been fun. At least I got to learn about that program and also picked up some Civil Rights knowledge that I didn't have previously. I am interested to see how teachers could implement this into the classroom setting.
